Giving yourself permission to do what’s calling you
When I was still teaching illustration to art school students, every week I would sit down and talk to each student about their current project. One week I met with a student and as they were showing the options for their work, they looked very frustrated.
"Here's the project that I think everyone else will want me to do." They went on to list all of the reasons why they should proceed with this project. The look on their face and their body language said everything. It seemed that with every word, they were shrinking.
Then they moved on to the next option. Everything in their energy changed. Their face lit up, they looked empowered and excited. As they told me about this project, I could tell that this was not the project they "should" do, but the one they WANTED to do.
As I encouraged them to commit to the project that their excitement and curiosity was leading them towards, everything changed. They began to envision the outcome and what it may be like to do something that they ACTUALLY ENJOYED.
They said to me "Thank you. No one has ever given me permission to do what I wanted to do."
Since this time, I have seen similar scenarios play out over and over again with students and clients. Most of us have grown up believing that we have to make a safe choice in order to survive. But what we don't realize is that when we choose what is actually calling us, that we can thrive.
This is because just following what we should do shrinks our energy, our motivation and our output. We become small and boring, actually! Following what lights us up, even though it may seem weird or like a long shot is what gives us energy, and motivation and makes us stand out!
Are you ready to give yourself permission to follow your dreams and step into what is calling you? I have two spots open for my one-on-one 6 month coaching package.
