Are you a multi-passionate creative having trouble focusing?
I was a commercial illustrator for 15 years. I worked for big brands like Target, Frito Lay, Google and small brands like Seattle Chocolate company. As a multi-passionate creative, I had a ton of different things in my portfolio. I was a published children's book illustrator, I had done advertising, packaging, pattern design. I felt a bit lost, burnout and unfulfilled. When I would meet with a potential client they would look at my portfolio and say ' what do you like doing best????' and I actually couldn't answer.
Part of the reason was because I actually didn't know. I had never been HONEST with myself about what I LIKED AND WANTED because I'd been taught to cater to everyone else. If I chose one or two things, I would be narrowing my chances of getting a job. And it really felt like I liked all of them!!!
In trauma language, this is called 'fawning'. If we grew up believing that we can't get love by just being our weirdest, most unique selves, we try to be everything to everyone.
There's nothing wrong with being multi-passionate (I still have a million hobbies) but it can lead us to feeling UNFULFILLED and frustrated when we can't focus. Once I found the right coach, she mirrored back to me what I couldn't see and encouraged me to do more of the things that truly lit me up.
And just like MAGIC, once I began to put out work that TRULY LIT ME UP...MY IDEAL CLIENTS FOUND ME. I was having more fun and making more money than ever and I felt really good about myself.
